LibrePlanet's almost here, come and be a volunteer!
We want to see a world where users are liberated -- not restricted -- by the software they use. Our annual LibrePlanet conference is a reflection of the community that formed itself over the years around this idea. It is coming up soon, March 19 & 20, and we need your help!
Volunteers will help moderate IRC rooms, introduce speakers, and facilitate question-and-answer periods. If participating in LibrePlanet in any of these capacities is something that interests you, please let us know by sending an email at resources@fsf.org with your interest (more details below).
If you commit by March 1, we'll send you a LibrePlanet 2022 t-shirt gratis. We will also upgrade your conference registration to Supporter level, which gives you access to a digital registration badge, our annual FSF trivia event with fabulous prizes, as well as access to the LibrePlanet after-party on Saturday night -- where we will socialize, play games, and reflect on what is promising to be a wonderful first day! Finally, your efforts will be revered by the FSF staff and have our eternal thanks!
Specifically, we need your help filling the following volunteer positions:
-
IRC and chat moderators: These volunteers will attend the various online spaces at the conference, make sure the discourse stays polite, and help direct people to the sessions they want to attend. This is basically a moderation task, with the goal of enforcing the LibrePlanet Safe Space Policy. Basic familiarity with the GNU/Linux command line and IRC is helpful but not required, and we successfully train new moderators to help out year after year. We will schedule two or three volunteers at a time for the entire duration of the conference to monitor IRC channels and a virtual hallway.
-
Room monitors: These volunteers will attend online LibrePlanet sessions inside the presentation space. They introduce speakers and help facilitate question-and-answer time between speaker and audience. Think of this as a public speaking role that is not very difficult or demanding, all while enforcing the LibrePlanet Safe Space Policy. You will need a computer with a free "as in freedom" operating system and a reliable Internet connection; and we also strongly recommend a combination headphones/microphone headset. We will schedule one room monitor per session or workshop.
There are some other minor roles for which your assistance may be requested. And, of course, if you are interested in helping to improve our virtual conference space, LibreAdventure, then please contact us anytime, and we will share instructions.
Please help us towards conducting a quality event to promote free software and (this year's conference theme) "Living Liberation." Volunteer by replying to this email, or emailing the FSF operations assistant (that's me), Davis Remmel, at resources@fsf.org. Feel welcome to ask any question, and send along details of your availability on the weekend of March 19, 2022, including your t-shirt size.
With gratitude,
Davis Remmel
