Lifesaving technology should belong to everyone, but the United States
Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) is working day and night to restrict

Steve Jobs went on record vowing to "destroy" Android because he felt Apple deserved an exclusive right to make touch-based smartphones. Jobs obviously did not have the best interest of smartphone users in mind, seeking to restrict options to his proprietary and restrictive devices. But are threats like this credible? How could Apple get rid of Android?

FSF responds to Oracle v. Google and the threat of software patents

As you likely heard on any number of news sites, Oracle has filed suit
against Google, claiming that Android infringes some of its Java-related copyrights and patents.
Too little information is available
about the copyright infringement claim to say much about it yet; we
expect we'll learn more as the case proceeds. But nobody deserves to
be the victim of software patent aggression, and Oracle is wrong to
use its patents to attack Android.

Last week, we asked you all to write to This American Life to thank
them for their episode about software patents, "When Patents
Attack!", and ask them to make it available in Ogg Vorbis format.
We thought it would also be helpful to offer them a copy of the show
that's already been converted to Ogg Vorbis; with this, the only
work they have to do is copy that file and post it on their own
servers. Here's the text of the letter we sent them.
