We'll be hand-delivering a comment against the the part of the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) that makes circumvention of DRM a crime, even when done for important reasons like security research or accessibility. Our comment is co-signed by more than 1,000 people, but the Copyright Office won't let us submit it online without proprietary software.

For the last few months, we've been raising an outcry against Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), a plan by Netflix and a block of other media and software companies to squeeze support for Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) into the HTML standard, the core language of the Worldwide Web. The HTML standard is set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which this block of corporations has been heavily lobbying as of late.

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA — Wednesday, July 6, 2016 — Despite dedicated resistance by tens of thousands of Web users and civil society groups, Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee allowed Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) to move to the next phase of development within the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) yesterday.
