We recently published a new page on our site, entitled "How to choose a license for your own work." It's a comprehensive set of license recommendations for new projects. It explains what factors are important to consider when making licensing decisions, and suggests specific licenses for different scenarios.

Blog Entry FSF Compliance Lab helps CiviCRM establish licensing best practices

Today the FSF announced that one of our high-priority projects has been fulfilled: CiviCRM provides an excellent donor and contact management system for nonprofit organizations. As part of the preparation for this announcement, the Compliance Lab helped the project handle its licensing issues more consistently.

Printers that can be reprogrammed by malicious print jobs are a security risk. So are printers that only run code signed by the manufacturer. For real security, printers should be running free software controlled by its owners.

Blog Entry Windows Phone 7 and Xbox ban GPL software

Recently word started getting around that the terms for getting apps on Windows Phone 7, and indie games on the Xbox, have changed. Now, programs submitted to Microsoft cannot have any code licensed under a copyleft license. Even if a single file is licensed under a weaker copyleft license like the LGPL, Microsoft will apparently reject it.
