Respecting freedom is better for business

The GNU General Public License (GPL) does not exist to maximize a company's ability to make money compared to proprietary mechanisms. Making money at the expense of people's freedom is not an ethical way to make money, and the overriding purpose of the GPL is to protect computer user freedom when the surrounding laws are failing to do so.
