To pay so much attention to Bill Gates' retirement is
missing the point. What really matters is not Gates, nor
Microsoft, but the unethical system of restrictions that
Microsoft, like many other software companies, imposes on its
customers.

I entered college four years ago, and like most college students, I relied heavily on my laptop, which ran Windows XP. One day, when I turned it on to get some work done, I was greeted with an error message; something failed during the boot process and Windows couldn't load, not even in Safe Mode. I tried to fix the issue by using the repair option on the Windows XP setup disc, but that didn't work either.

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Thursday, July 25, 2013 -- The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today launched a fundraising initiative for Replicant (http://replicant.us), a fully free Android distribution and the first mobile operating system (OS) to run without relying on proprietary system code. Replicant's small volunteer developer team is focused on improving their OS, while also expanding it to work on more devices. Donations will primarily be used to buy new devices for development and testing -- a critical need -- but will also help fund infrastructure and promotion for the project.
