All Apple hardware runs tightly controlled proprietary operating systems. Apple has used its mobile devices to distribute iOS, a version of OS X with pared down functionality, but just as many restrictions.

I have said in speeches that Apple could forcibly impose software
changes in Mac OS X, just as Microsoft can with Windows. I heard this
in the Mac community, but there is no published information that
confirms it, and I now believe that I was misinformed. There is no
evidence that Apple has installed software changes without the user's
permission.

The files created by Microsoft Office and Apple's iWork are not created in OpenDocument format -- instead, Microsoft and Apple control the formats their software create -- leaving users worldwide at their mercy, and with a string of incompatible documents.

Recently, in free software news, Richard Stallman protested representatives of the European Patent Office giving a presentation in Australia concerning software patents. Trisquel released their newest LTS version, codename: Taranis. The chief architect of Apple's compiler group answered a question about the upstream potential of their work on the GNU Compiler Collection.
