A primary goal of the Free Software Foundation is a world where everyone can do what they need to do with their computers using only free software. Great progress has been made toward this goal. Free software has reached a point where it is now easily possible to buy an affordable computer with hardware -- including Wi-Fi and accelerated graphics -- that is fully supported by free software (an excellent resource for choosing appropriate hardware is h-node.com.

At the FSF, we have a goal of increasing the size and strength of the free software movement. To expand the movement, we need to get the attention of people who have never heard of free software before, and explain why it's important. We have to make the case for the four freedoms that characterize free software, and to succeed fully, we must be able to do this for people who don't care to know more than they have to about computers.

I hope you'll help us get the word out about the new version. But I'd like to add a little (okay, a lot) more detail here about why we view the Directory as an important component of our strategy to promote free software awareness and use, and how the new version came to be.
