News Item Activists trick-or-treat for free software at Windows 8 launch event

New York, New York, USA -- Thursday, October 25th, 2012 -- Today visitors to the primary Windows 8 launch event were greeted by an unexpected and uninvited visitor -- a gnu. Activists, one dressed as the free software movement's buffalo-like mascot, converged on Microsoft's event to distribute pamphlets about the hidden dangers of Microsoft's latest proprietary creation. The Halloween-themed action included plastic pumpkin buckets full of DVDs loaded with Trisquel, a free software distribution of the GNU/Linux operating system.

Apple's iOS: smaller package, bigger restrictions

All Apple hardware runs tightly controlled proprietary operating systems. Apple has used its mobile devices to distribute iOS, a version of OS X with pared down functionality, but more as restrictions.

For the last few months, we've been raising an outcry against Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), a plan by Netflix and a block of other media and software companies to squeeze support for Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) into the HTML standard, the core language of the Worldwide Web. The HTML standard is set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which this block of corporations has been heavily lobbying as of late.

It's only a month before LibrePlanet 2013: "Commit Change" and the campaigns team is in a flurry of activity, putting the finishing touches on the conference plans. People are registering quickly and it's great to see how much everyone is looking forward to the conference.
