This new position will serve as a key player on the Business and Operations team for Berklee Media. Under the direction of the Software Engineering Manager, the Systems Engineer is responsible for building and maintaining the software and production systems behind the Berkleemusic, Berklee’s award winning online music school, and the publishing arm, Berklee Press. The Systems Engineer will work closely with the Business and Operations team to design, build, and upgrade critical systems components within our GNU/Linux-based infrastructure, as well as monitor and analyze the existing platform for weaknesses. This role requires some programming experience and will grow into more of a software development role over time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, deploys and maintains integrations among existing enterprise systems and new partners.
  • Serves as first responder in the event of off-hours systems and follows established escalation procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining “four nines” availability of our online school infrastructure.
  • Available at times for operational upgrades and emergency off-hours either remotely or on-site depending on scope of issue.
  • Responsible for analyzing system hardware and software performance and defining and prioritizing projects deemed necessary to enhance performance, capacity, and stability.
  • Maintains and addresses issues of system security and the integrity of our confidential customer data.
  • Provides issue resolution on a day-to-day basis for Berkleemusic’s custom software platform, as well as assists in planning and implementing long-term resolutions to issues.
  • Keeps documentation of all performance improvements made and implements an online upgrades calendar under the direction of the Software and Engineering Manager.
  • Stays current with technology and researches the web for new developments and trends.
  • Qualifications:

  • BS or BA in information technology, computer science or related field preferred.
  • Strong GNU/Linux skills required. Experience with installation, upgrades and maintenance required; GNU/Linux virtualization experience a plus.
  • Network administration experience required. Experience with configuring network services such as DNS and e-mail required; switch, firewall and router configuration a plus.
  • Experience with high traffic, public facing websites.
  • Experience working with free software relational databases. Replication and high-availbility experience a plus.
  • Familiarity with free software version control systems.
  • Familiarity with enterprise-level virtualized storage and systems.
  • Ability to analyze infrastructure for weaknesses and single points of failure, assess risk based on that analysis, and make recommendations to mitigate as necessary.
  • Some programming experience required, with a desire to learn. Ability to automate systems administration tasks using shell scripts a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
