The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado is seeking a scientific programmer to participate in the development of scientific data processing, management, analysis, and visualization systems for present and upcoming NASA space science projects.

LASP is one of the top space science research institutes in the country with facilities in Boulder, Colorado employing approximately 400 scientists, engineers, support personnel, and students. This individual will work closely with scientists and engineers in the development, operation, and maintenance of scientific software systems, primarily using C, C++, IDL, and shell scripting languages. Responsibilities will also include supporting the analysis of both scientific and non-scientific data sets. This person may also supervise one or more student assistants.

Responsibilities and duties include:

Design, implement, test, and document software systems for data processing, management, analysis, and visualization of scientific and engineering data. Program in IDL, C, and C++ languages, as well as shell scripts. Perform analysis of scientific and non-scientific data sets, and provide direct support to scientists. Perform necessary software testing to support requirements verification. Present work at meetings or reviews; give oral presentations in both formal and informal settings. Communicate with scientists, data systems staff, users, and stakeholders to translate needs into system requirements and solid solutions. Remain current and aware of latest relevant technologies and software engineering practices, and keep up with current relevant scientific and information systems research.

Requirements include:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in computer science, a physical science, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in modern software engineering practices and environments, including object-oriented programming
  • Experience programming in C, C++, and/or the Interactive Data Language (IDL), and the willingness and ability to learn new languages as necessary
  • Knowledge of programming in a GNU/Linux environment, including script programming.
  • Working knowledge of modern software/hardware technology and related industry trends
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple job tasks
  • Ability to work within a team environment, but self motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with end-users
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills
  • Strong interest and aptitude in mathematics, numerical analysis, astronomical algorithms, spacecraft orbit/attitude algorithms
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Unequivocal love of science and a passion for applying technical programming and data analysis skills to scientific research pursuits
  • Desirable but not required:

  • Working knowledge of solar physics and atmospheric sciences
  • Experience managing software development projects or data processing systems
  • Demonstrated skill in all phases of the object-oriented software development life-cycle
  • Experience programming in Python, Perl, Bash, Csh
