We need a talented Lead Systems Administrator to take charge of the IT needs of our growing nonprofit. You will work with all three divisions of our diverse organization, set the priorities of IT staff, and ensure that projects are successfully executed.

The Open Planning Project is a 'dot-org', a non-profit connecting technology with social change. We write free software that liberates data and enables civic participation, and we produce popular advocacy journalism sites like Streetsblog.org, Streetfilms.org, and GothamSchools.org. We have 55 employees, most of whom work in our beautiful SoHo office, with the others working remotely from all over the world.

We need a talented Lead Systems Administrator to take charge of the IT needs of our growing nonprofit. You will work with all three divisions of our diverse organization, set the priorities of IT staff, and ensure that projects are successfully executed. The Lead Systems Administrator will manage at least one other systems administrator while remaining hands-on and engaged with the needs of TOPP staff.

We are looking for someone who will spend the first few months balancing day-to-day needs with assessment of our current systems, and who can prioritize improvements and projects with the organization's leadership. Strong technical skills and inherent curiosity are a must, as is the judgment to bring in outside experts when needed. General responsibilities include maintaining the integrity of our development environment, ensuring that day-to-day operations run smoothly, and building on our existing infrastructure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee all central IT services, including development environments and office communication systems
  • Manage at least one other systems administrator, and manage the involvement of expert consultants as needed
  • Build out our overall systems architecture to ensure that our internal office needs and our software development and production needs are stable and secure as we continue to grow
  • Build and deploy new servers for projects that really need to scale
  • Assist with day-to-day maintenance, including backup, upgrades, patches, etc.
  • Resolve technical, capacity, and security issues
  • Asset tracking, ordering, and documentation
  • Maintain wired and wireless network
  • Research, recommend, and implement new technologies
  • Some desktop support and documentation
  • Play a key role in the success of our innovative organization
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful candidates will have IT management experience, a knack for working with all sorts of people, and good judgment in balancing competing needs. Other qualifications include:

  • Knack for troubleshooting a variety of system, networking, and hardware problems
  • Strong understanding of networks and servers, including: firewalling, VLANs, VPN, Apache, LDAP, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NFS, NIS
  • GNU/Linux fluency. We look for general knowledge, not concepts that are limited to a specific distribution.
  • Proven ability to define, outline, and plan goals and objectives with the senior team, and to create and lead a day-to-day tactical IT operational plan
  • Management experience
  • A natural affinity for streamlining and automating common tasks to ensure consistency and efficiency, a high level of personal organization, and the ability to prioritize needs
  • The ability to communicate well with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • In-depth knowledge of routers and switches.
  • Minimum of 5 years systems experience, including hands-on and/or oversight experience with:
  • Help desk support and documentation
  • Management of user accounts
  • Server setup, monitoring, optimization, and maintenance
  • Data center equipment
  • Network administration and management for a wired-and-wireless network
  • Office systems including: email, VOIP, file server, and backup systems
  • Asset management/budgeting
  • Supplier/vendor relations
  • WE OFFER:

TOPP invests in the best people and treats them right. We offer competitive salaries and great benefits (all the basics, plus five weeks of vacation and free lunch). You will be surrounded by friendly, smart, passionate people, and your work will contribute to the empowerment of civil society.
