We are seeking a Software Engineer to help improve, extend, and maintain software as part of the AgShare grant, as well as work with partners to assist with deployment and training.

Creative Commons is seeking a Software Engineer to help improve, extend, and maintain software as part of the AgShare grant, as well as work with partners to assist with deployment and training. The contractor will work under the supervision of, and report to, the CTO. Additional coordination will be provided by the Director of the Education Program.

The AgShare project is focused on building an agricultural education community among African institutions of higher education, founded on the materials and tools of open educational resources (OER). This means that the community is expected to work collaboratively to foster innovation and access to agricultural education through the use of Creative Commons-licensed materials. Creative Commons is tasked with providing technical leadership, especially around search and discovery of OER, by customizing our the DiscoverEd software (based on Apache Nutch) and by consulting with and training the AgShare partners in these matters.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in education, agriculture, African development, and other issues of relevance to the project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support AgShare grant technology needs.
  • Analyze user specifications and requirements.
  • Develop, test, debug, and document programs.
  • Write operational documentation.
  • Revise and update programs and documentation as required.
  • Provide deployment assistance and training for Nutch-based application.
  • Ability to work independently and accommodate shifting schedules.
  • Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Travel to Africa two times (minimum) to lead training.
  • Skill Requirements:

  • Excellent written and spoken technical communication.
  • Excellent knowledge of Java, RDF, XHTML, web services, software design, engineering techniques and best practices.
  • Excellent debugging skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of GNU/Linux and free software development tools (including Subversion, git, etc).
  • Experience with Apache Nutch, and Lucene is desirable.
  • Experience with Python is desirable.
  • Job Environment:

    Prefer local (San Francisco) candidates; remote candidates with excellent communication skills considered.
