SUMMARY:Copyright vs. Community in the Age of Computer Networks
DTSTART:20070222T200000Z
DTEND:20070222T220000Z
DESCRIPTION:This speech will be accessible to all and the public is en
couraged to attend. Copyright developed in the age of the printing p
ress\, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying
imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit
well with computer networks\, and only draconian punishments can enfor
ce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbyin
g for draconian punishments\, and to increase their copyright powers\,
while suppressing public access to technology. But if we\nseriously
hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote pro
gress\, for the benefit of the public--then we must make changes in th
 e other direction. Location\: University of California\, Davis\, 1065
