SUMMARY:Copyright vs. Community in the Age of Computer Networks
DTSTART:20070227T170000Z
DTEND:20070227T174500Z
DESCRIPTION:This speech will be accessible to all audiences and the pu
blic is encouraged to attend. Copyright developed in the age of the p
rinting press\, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized
copying imposed by the printing\npress. But the copyright system doe
s not fit well with computer networks\, and only draconian punishments
can enforce it.\n The global corporations that profit from copyrig
ht are lobbying for draconian punishments\, and to increase their copy
right powers\, while suppressing public access to technology. But if
we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--t
o promote progress\, for the benefit of the public--then we must make
changes in the other direction. Location\: room 74\, Jorgensen (Buildi
