I want to talk about the increased risk of environmental disasters relating to climate change, and look at several projects that have used free software's philosophy of transparency, sharing, and experimentation to create software that can easily adapt to a community's needs.

Setting up your own email server is a nifty project for free software enthusiasts, which gives you complete freedom over how you read, organize, and store your email. It took me only one weekend, and wasn't that hard for me, as a GNU/Linux user with intermediate knowledge.
